Prototype:Panic

(00) Design Journal

This section of my blog focuses on the development of my design work; looking at random doodles, paintings, design sketch’s, photographs and computer rendered imagery. This section also looks into the experimentation and exploration of my design process. All the work presented here plays in an important role in the overall development of my work.

Inner workings of a space invader.

This image reflects my own personal interpretation of what the inside of a space invader may look like, this was drawn for no particular reason other than to satisfy my own curiosity, the silhouette of the space invader is based on the old style pixel monsters, the inside is drawn by myself.

Visualization of interactive narrative.

This image reflects my own visual interpretation of an interactive narrative, I draw out diagrams like these to help me understand where everything is going. What button links what page and furthermore what narrative is linking to what view. I do these drawings before I plan out the entire narrative on my wall.

Loading screen (animation) visualization.

This image represents my first attempt at trying to design and understand how an animated loading screen would work. I story boarded it at a six second interval. The image would work with the pixel monsters falling at different speeds creating a raining effect, they would then hit an invisible boundary to stop them falling off the screen while also spelling out the name of the logo. At this point there would be a wipe effect scrolling across the screen changing the pixel monsters into a normal font to make the logo more visible.

Start-up screen design.

This image relates to the first page of my application, this essentially is the “tap to start” screen that kicks off the music, enables the “HUD” screen and generally starts the show. The design is very simple and is more like a template than a finished idea.

Planning, random ideas, development.

This image records some ideas into horizontal views, status bars and loading screens. It also reflects ideas relating to perspective projection and frustum. The image on the left is one of my notes around “Synesthesia” I looked into this regarding my pixel monsters, I wanted them to have some personality and used the aspect of synesthesia to enforce this. Synesthesia for those who are unaware is the condition based on sense where letters and words are seen as colours and those colours are reflective of experiences.

Doodles and notes.

These notes relate to aspects of the work that needed to be done at the current time. Issues regarding taking out the camera and tripod, needing to make videos regarding the music and the wanting to send out emails to people. The images also comment on the friday crits and what needed to mentioned there while also commenting on what needed to done in relation to the project as a whole. Issues regarding testing, blogging, designing and more.

Comments and visual interpretation of plan.

Within this image I comment on the need to focus myself on certain aspects of work to get the most out of what I am doing in regards to those chosen disciplines. Within these images I comment on the need to beta test, the implementation of the pixel monsters within my narrative and the design development. I further expand on the need to make more videos and finally comment on the aspect of emailing game companies for relevant information and help. The image to the right is that of a visual interpretation of sound; its not entirely relevant to the work I am doing however it does help my study ethic.
